English Irregular Verbs: How to Learn Them Without a Table

Irregular verbs can feel intimidating because they are usually presented in a big table: go-went-gone, see-saw-seen, take-took-taken. A table is useful as a reference, but it does not work well as a memorization method. Verbs are easier to learn through phrases and situations.

If you try to memorize 80 rows in a row, your brain gets tired quickly. It is better to start with the most common verbs and закреплять them in small groups.

Start with 15 verbs

You do not need all irregular verbs at the beginning. First, learn the ones that appear often in everyday speech:

  • be-was/were-been;
  • go-went-gone;
  • come-came-come;
  • do-did-done;
  • make-made-made;
  • take-took-taken;
  • get-got-got;
  • see-saw-seen;
  • know-knew-known;
  • think-thought-thought;
  • say-said-said;
  • tell-told-told;
  • give-gave-given;
  • find-found-found;
  • have-had-had.

That is already enough for a large number of everyday phrases.

Learn not three forms, but a ready-made mini-scene

Weak method: go-went-gone — to go.

Better method:

  • I go to work every day.
  • I went to work yesterday.
  • I have gone home.

You can see how the form changes inside the sentence. This helps you remember the verb not as a dry line in a list, but as a useful tool.

Group similar forms together

Some verbs are easier to learn together:

  • cut-cut-cut, put-put-put, cost-cost-cost;
  • buy-bought-bought, bring-brought-brought, think-thought-thought;
  • begin-began-begun, drink-drank-drunk, sing-sang-sung.

These groups save attention. You notice the pattern and stop treating each form as a separate problem.

How to review

Choose 5 verbs a day. For each one, make 3 short sentences: present, past, experience. The next day, do not take new verbs until you can remember yesterday's ones without a hint.

Example for take:

  • I take notes.
  • I took a taxi.
  • I have taken this course.

Common mistake

Do not learn irregular verbs only with a Russian translation. The verb get can mean "receive," "become," "arrive," and "understand." That is why it needs phrases: get home, get better, get a message, get it.

The main point

Irregular verbs become easier when you learn them not as a table, but as flashcards with examples. Start with a small group, repeat the forms in sentences, and come back to difficult verbs after a few days.
