Say, tell, speak, talk: how to stop confusing English speaking words

In Russian we often use one word, «говорить», but in English you have to choose: say, tell, speak, or talk. Because of that, even simple phrases can slow you down: how do you say “she told me,” “we talked,” “I speak English,” “what did you say?”

The good news: these words can be sorted by situation. You do not need to remember a long rule every time. It is enough to notice what matters most in the sentence: the words themselves, the person, the language, or the conversation.

Say: what was said

Say is used when the content of the phrase matters. After say, you often have the actual words or something.

Note: say does not need a person after it. You can say she said to me, but in everyday speech, when there is a listener, tell is more common.

Tell: say something to someone

Tell almost always answers the question “to whom?”. After tell, you usually have a person: tell me, tell him, tell your friend, tell the teacher.

She told me the truth. — Она сказала мне правду.

Tell him about the meeting. — Расскажи ему о встрече.

I told you. — Я же тебе говорил.

Common beginner mistake: I said him. Do not say that. Correct: I told him or I said to him.

Speak: language, ability, or formal speaking

Speak is often connected with languages and the ability to speak.

Examples

I speak English. — Я говорю по-английски.

Do you speak German? — Вы говорите по-немецки?

She spoke at the conference. — Она выступала на конференции.

Speak sounds a little more formal than talk. If you mean a friendly conversation, talk is often better.

Talk: communicate, chat, discuss

Talk is the process of communication. Usually, there is a dialogue, a chat, or a discussion.

Examples

Can we talk? — Мы можем поговорить?

We talked for two hours. — Мы разговаривали два часа.

I need to talk to you. — Мне нужно с тобой поговорить.

Talk works well for real-life communication: with a friend, colleague, partner, or teacher.

How to choose quickly

Ask yourself one question.

If the words are important — say.

If the person who received the message is important — tell.

If the language or a speech is important — speak.

If the conversation is important — talk.

Common mistakes

Mistake 1: say me

You cannot say say me the answer. Correct: tell me the answer.

Mistake 2: tell about without a person

You can say tell me about your trip. But if there is no person, use say or talk about depending on the meaning.

Mistake 3: talk English

If you mean knowledge of a language, use speak English. Talk English can appear in rare contexts, but for a learner it is usually a trap.
