How to Learn English from TV Series Without Quitting After the First Episode

TV series seem like a pleasant way to learn English, but they often turn into frustration. The characters speak fast, the jokes are unclear, and the subtitles are too slow to read. After one episode, a thought appears: “My level is too low.”

The problem is usually not your level, but the wrong way of working with the material.

Don’t watch an episode like a one-hour lesson

An hour of a series in English is simply too much. For learning, it is better to choose a scene that lasts 2–4 minutes. That gives you something you can actually work with: listen to it, break it down, write down phrases, and repeat them.

One short scene is more useful than five episodes in the background.

First viewing — focus on meaning

First, watch the scene with Russian or English subtitles and understand the general meaning. Don’t stop after every word. Your job is to understand who wants what and what is happening.

Second viewing — focus on phrases

The second time, write down 5–7 phrases that you can use in real life:

  • I don't get it.
  • What do you mean?
  • Give me a second.
  • That's not the point.
  • I have no idea.

Don’t write down rare jokes or strange expressions if you won’t use them.

Third viewing — focus on sound

Now play the short clip and repeat after the characters. You do not need to copy the accent perfectly. What matters is getting used to linking sounds: don't you, going to, want to, did you.

English often sounds faster because of these linked forms.

What to do with new words

Don’t put every unfamiliar word into flashcards. Choose only useful ones. A good test is: “Can I imagine a situation where I would say this myself?” If yes, add it.

A one-week plan

Day 1: choose a scene and watch it for meaning.

Day 2: write down 5 phrases.

Day 3: review the phrases in flashcards.

Day 4: rewatch the scene without Russian subtitles.

Day 5: say the phrases out loud.

Day 6: make your own examples.

Day 7: pick a new scene.

The main thing

TV series help if you work with short fragments. Don’t try to understand everything. Take useful phrases, review them in flashcards, and return to the scene several times.
